Most people know very little about our native hardwoods and are often unable to tell the difference between one species and another. 

This part of the website assumes no specialist knowledge of timber, with pictures to help you identify different hardwood species as well as information about their use, availability, strength, structure and appearance.

There are also pictures of our native deciduous trees with information about their botanical features and where possible their preferred habitat and contribution to Scotland's woodland ecology.
